Ship T. J. Clark of Toronto, Ontario
Captain John S. Benedict was captain of the ferry running between Toronto Island and downtown Toronto in the 1910's.
The T. J. Ferry was built in 1911 and began as a fireboat, to serve Toronto's harbour and island communities. By 1923, she shifted to freight service for residents of the Toronto islands, operated first by the Toronto Ferry Company and later by the Toronto Transportation Commission (TTC) after 1927. In 1930, she was converted to passenger service, becoming part of the fleet that ferried people between the mainland and the islands.
She was one of the few composite-hulled vessels (wood planking on steel frames) still operating on the Great Lakes into the 1950's.. Retired in 1960 and sold for scrap in 1961.
